As Law Enforcement it is our Duty to protect a serve. What that means for each agency and community is different because the needs of each agency and community are different. Here at the Custer County Sheriff's Office we seek to build community through service. That starts with strategic goals set from the top down. Sheriff Smith has laid these goals out as follows;

Protect Life and property and preserve our small-town values.
  • Provide life saving training to deputies and posse members 
  • Utilize crime analysis to target problem areas in the community 
  • Preserve friendly open community
  • Implement solutions to care for mentally ill
Recruit, retain, and develop the best team members.
  • Ensure all staff compete mandated training 
  • Research, build community support for and implement a pay increase to increase regional competitiveness
  • Implement mindfulness and career enrichment trainings
  • Achieve state POST accreditation 
Creatively work with the community to solve problems and prevent crime.
  • Create a peer support mental health resource for team members 
  • Develop and implement a veterans court
  • Find new ways to interact with underserved members in the community
  • Implement social events to allow interaction with diverse community members
Build and nurture new partnerships with new stakeholders to achieve our mission.
